What is EFS and why do we need it?
EFS stands for Education For Sustainability. It teaches our students how to live in sustainable ways; helping them to become responsible and resilliant citizens.
Sustainability means taking the long term view of how our actions effect future generations and making sure we dont depleate (use up) resources at a rate faster than the earth can renew them,or cause polution at a rate faster than the earth can accomodate.
A sustainable community is one is one that resembles a living system in which all of the resources (human, natural and economic) are renewed and in ballance for eternity.
We need to teach our children about sustainability for a variety of reasons; preassures that the planet and humanity are facing that they have not faced before; Increasing population, climate change, peaking oil production to name a few.
If our children have the skills and knowledge that relate to problem solving, self-efficacy, recycling, design, energy, thermodynamics, alternative energy, gardening, localised production, closing resource loops etc then they will have what they need to reshape their world for the better no matter what kind of future they find themselves experienceing.
Can we give them a greater gift?
