Dear Parents and Caregivers
I hope you had a fabulous time with your child at home over the holiday period. Term 1 was a successful and productive term just as term 2 will be. Following are the subject areas we will be working on this term:
Our Unit of Inquiry this term is Fuel/Energy. We will be looking at different types of fuel and energy and how this can sustained our world. We hope to visit Motat towards the middle of the term.
Our writing genre for this term is Narrative. Please encourage your child to write more and more in their free time. This is a helpful way to extend a child’s learning.
Much of our reading will be integrated with our narrative genre and our Unit of Inquiry, Fuel/Energy. Students are most welcome to read freely about the topics at hand and bring some interesting reading books to school. We encourage students to read the newspaper, therefore feel free to send your child to school with any interesting articles from a newspaper to share with the class.
Our numeracy focus is multiplication and division and our topic maths is Geometry, learning about shape and position. Maths homework this term will relate to these depending on the stage of your child.
In the Visual Arts curriculum this term we will be working with clay and move into painting half way through the term. Please ensure your child brings an old shirt to school for painting and if anyone wants to get rid of their newspapers it would be much appreciated in Rooms 3 and 4.
In Drama small performances will take place to prepare ourselves for our production next term. Singing will be another focus in the arts department.
In Health we will continue to learn about nutritional food as an energy source and how we can sustain our sources. This is a neat way to integrate into our current study, Energy and Fuel. Physical Education is learning large ball skills and getting ourselves fit and ready for Term 3’s Cross Country.
Other important dates are: Muriwai Tree Planting with Rooms 5 & 6 – Wednesday 16 May, Community Assembly – Friday 18 May, Book Week – Monday 21 May - Friday 25 May, Room 3 & 4 Trip to MOTAT - Thursday 31 May, Community Assembly – Friday 8 June, Portfolios Home – Friday 29 June, Community Assembly – Friday 29 June. Please do your best to make yourselves available for some of these events. We are always in need of transport and parent help and appreciate your assistance.
To support and reinforce classroom learning, children will be given homework to complete each week. Students should be able to complete this independently, as it will be maintenance and practice of what has already been learned in class, and also work that relates to personal goals. This will be given each Monday to be handed in by the following Monday. The 3 homework options for each student decided on in the 3-way conferences remain the same. Homework will be reinforced positively in the classroom to encourage all students to participate willingly. We hope that this system will motivate children intrinsically so that when they reach college years homework is a natural part of their life. We depend on your support to make it work.
We are looking forward to a wonderful term where both home and school are on board teaching our awesome students how To Care, To Learn and To Grow and our students continue to use their Key Competencies to bring the best out of them.
If you need to clarify any of the above, please speak me, I will be more than happy to accommodate you before or after school.
Regards
Ms Bronwyn Howard
