Dear parents/caregivers,

I hope that you all had an amazing holiday and you are now fresh and ready to begin a new term of learning. Term 1 was a very successful and eventful term. However, term 2 will be even better.

Your child’s homework will include a weekly maths sheet which will be tailored to your child’s level and will reinforce what they have been working on that week during maths time. They will also come home each night (except Friday) with their reader. Students also have an option of being able to take an extra book home if they wish. Each week students will have a new list of words in their spelling notebook - it is crucial that these words are practiced each day until mastered.

Thursday 26th April is the Junior Team Information Night from 6-7pm. Please come with any questions or queries that you might have.

Room 2 will be doing a bit of painting and clay sculpting in term 2 and it would be helpful if you could find an old top/shirt for your child to wear so that their uniform isn’t ruined or stained.

Room 2 experimented with having “brain food” at 9.30am everyday for 5 minutes and we found as a class that this extra fuel helped us to concentrate on our work for longer. Thank you to the mums/dads who made sure their child had some sort of fruit or vegetable in their lunch box.

At the end of term 1 student’s were tested on the first 100 sight words. I have copied your child’s test and the highlighted words that your child didn’t recognise. It would be very helpful if you could go over these with your child (you could make a game of snap). It is essential that students develop a sight word vocabulary so that they do not have to process every word that they read.  These will be tested again early term 2. Then we can move onto the second 100 sight words.

Room 2 have been very lucky to have a great team of proactive parents who come in on a regular basis to help out or even just to have a look at the kinds of things that their child is doing in class. If you are interested in visiting or becoming a Room Parent then please see me, phone me at school, or email me at leah@woodhill.school.nz

I look forward to an eventful term ahead.

Dear parents/caregivers,

Thank you to the parents that attended the Junior School Information night, I hope that you found it helpful and valuable.

Attached are your child’s learning goals for Term 2. Please discuss these with your child and talk about how your child will go about reaching their goals before the end of Term 2. For example, will your child need to work on his/her goals as a part of their homework?

Just an update on homework to say that I don’t appear to be getting homework books coming back on Friday. I only seem to be getting half the class. If you don’t have a homework book because it has gotten lost then please let me know and I can issue you will a new book. It is crucial that your child is reading to you most nights, doing his/her sight words, practising spelling words and working on aspects of their maths. I will send home within the next week a maths profile which will have outlined all the knowledge that your child needs to know to achieve the next stage they are working towards.

If you have any questions about how you can help your child more at home or just general queries then please don’t hesitate to contact me or visit me at school.

Dear parents/caregivers,

Coming home with your child’s homework will be the (maths profile) cloud maths sheet. This sheet will have all the knowledge components within the stage that they are working within. Your child will already know some of the knowledge. However, it would be beneficial for your child if you worked on some of these together say for example one a week.

In Room 2 we are going to be learning about plants as our inquiry topic. If you are an expert in plants and planting it would be greatly appreciated if you could let me know as you may be a resource for the students during the topic. Also if you have any unwanted seedlings or plant pots Room 2 would greatly appreciate your donation.

For our art topic this term we are going to be doing 3D construction and sculpting. If you have any cans Room 2 would appreciate it if you could let us use them for our 3D construction.
